We thought we had reached the top... only to find out this was only Little Haystack... down and up again to #3 Haystack

I had said early in the week my perspective and drive for my future must switch gears and become more proactive. I must morph into hunting mode and be the leader of a pact, where so many people are territorial, dominating and challenging to work with. Like the animals of the wild I am about to embark upon a journey that will test my wits, my strength and my endurance. I am shooting for the stars, and beginning to see that I can form a place in the world for myself. I WILL form my own niche.

While I amble through the woods of my life and society, I choose to be adventurous, to laugh at everything, and most of all myself. I plan to be humble, curious, cautious and independent. I will continue to be responsible, generous, and fun loving to any friend or stranger. Amidst all this changing it is wise of me to fill my life with simple pleasures and luxuries… this past week I will have worked 40 hours (finally). I will save it all and keep very little for rainy-day pleasantries. BUT, however in my spare time I will indulge in some ADK Experience…

I started this off with my first morning of kayaking!

New Perspectives

I came back to Plattsburgh after going home with A LOT on my mind. After going into Manhattan and meeting the amazing group at KCSA, I learned my life must embark on a more direct path.  Ever since I have been spending my rainy days sitting away at this laptop, searching, and researching where my next move will be made. I’ve been contemplating moving to MA - perhaps Boston or Cambridge for work, maybe Burlington, VT. A few jobs have sparked my interest on Long island but I don’t think that is the best life choice – moving home with the parents-. I have enjoyed much of my independence, living abroad for 10 months, I’ve lived in three apartments in the last year and a half and I have enjoyed every bit of the process. I am young and still wanting to spend the first few years of my life enjoying youth and the splendors of the outdoors. I understand the ‘real’ world awaits me just over yonder - I am ready for you. But are you ready for me?

Thursday June 25^th

 ^{So I get into Huntington at 3:55PM, hug my new friend Tom goodbye and race the clock to get home. Change; throw Dan in the car and OFF TO JONES BEACH WE GO.}

Ok so were not just going to Jones Beach, because its nice out and it’s a beach and there’s a concert. We were volunteers with REVERB

REVERB is an amazing organization that EVERYONE needs to know about:

Deeply rooted within the music and environmental communities, Reverb educates and engages musicians and their fans to take action toward a more sustainable future.

Reverb is a non-profit organization founded by environmentalist Lauren Sullivan and her musician husband, Guster guitarist/vocalist Adam Gardner.  

They work with bands like: Guster (of course- who I saw at SU with Ben Folds 2 months back AMAZING SHOW- I LOVE GUSTER), Jack Johnson, The Fray, DMB, Phish, John Mayer, The Dead, Cayamo, Maroon 5 and MORE!

So Dan and me walked around spreading the REVERB voice educating fans on offsetting the carbon emission and what their ecological footprint means! We also go to meet other non-for-profit groups doing amazing things for the world:

MORE OF Thursday June 25^th

 ^{So I’m walking around PENN.. Afraid Ill miss my 2:48 train back. Since I already missed the 1:34 by walking instead of taking the subway (but totally worth it since I got to see Jacob!) I accidently go to track 17 NO NO. Go back up the long way. Its track 19!!! Good job Heather}

As I’m about to board the train 2 kind of creepy middle aged men are oogling me and tell me “nice outfit, red”… definitely don’t want to sit near these guys. I take a seat in one of those long 3 seats sections near the door- shortly realizing the train will be packed and I’ll be forced to sit next to someone… PLEASE NOT THE CREEPY OLDER GUYS.

So I look over my shoulder and see an attractive guy my age in a plaid shirt and I think to myself  * please sit next to me! *

And don’t you know he does… and that is how I met my NEW friend Tom Kaiser, from Smithtown that just graduated from college in Virginia. Hah! I’m pretty sure before the train even moved we were already talking music and sharing a set of headphones. He said he lost his. How painful to have an iPod and yet not headphones! Eek! The horror

Whirlwind Day

Thursday June 25^{th... just getting started....}

Up at 5, after not getting in from WING NIGHT till 1am… smart one Heather

I got up, I got dressed, printed the resume, got the directions and away I go. I got on the train to PENN before 8am and made my way to KCSA.

Back-story now…

So I work at 8 Ball Billiards in Plattsburgh. My new friend Ben and I were talking the previous Friday night about my future and my potential (he thinks I have a bright future -  go figure!) Any who, Ben tells me about his friend Garth who is also a fellow Plattsburgh Alum who currently works in Manhattan doing IR (investor relations) for a private companies in its 40^th year KCSA. On my behalf he exchanges Garth’s email and mine and after a few back and forth’s this past week we set up a meeting time.

So getting into PENN was as always, a blur of people and sounds and smells… not all so nice as some of you might be familiar- hah. And to E 53^rd I go. KCSA is a strategic communications firm, specializing in marketing; IR, PR and other business communication consulting related services. I ended up meeting a few members of the staff, all amazing, dedicated, creative and full-of-life professionals. (I wish I had heard about this firm sooner - they are definitely a company to be in the know about). After a few hours of sharing stories of life’s journeys, questions about prospective futures I headed back to PENN with an abundance of knowledge, admiration and appreciation for Garth and the staff of KCSA for taking time out of their busy morning to talk to me.

This is where things start sparking. I’m walking down 5^th aver to 33^rd from 53^rd to get back to Penn. Black heels on – dressed to the 9 - feeling full of life. As I’m making my way down the street iPod in ear and smile from side to side I take in the sights for the first 84 sunny days NYC has seen in a month or more.  To my shock I’m walking another few blocks and who do I see coming in my direction Jacob Coleman!

-Back-story on Jacob- We met New Years Eve in Time Square watching the ball drop with my friend Kelly. Jacob from Tennessee was up for the ball and headed back to TN straight after. To my surprise he tells me he’s moved to NYC 3 weeks earlier and is filming a movie. And I should be an extra in it? SURE! I Say! Oh but I’m heading back to Plattsburgh Friday morning… darn! We had time for a quick photo and then I made my way into Penn for the ride home before an even more action packed evening.

Monday – Wednesday in Long Island

What a week, Home in Long Island… 

I got in late Sunday around 8 and by 1030 was already meeting up with the pack. I got to see my best friends Andrew, Dan, Ben, Eric, and Tyler, as well as some others. We hung out at Heckscher Park. Twas fun!!! As always

Around 2 ish we went back to Andrews to hang out and I decided to hide under some pillows and a blanket and jump out when the others got there..heee.hee.. sneaky.. to my surprise I woke up at 4 with drool down my mouth.. I had fallen asleep and Ben said it was time to go home and he’d drive me ! hah

The next couple of days I spent running errands with Mom and getting to see some of my other favorite people like Marybeth, Jackie Finn, John O’keefe, and Sasha. Wednesday was nuts, we went to WING NIGHT at Rookie’s in Huntington Village… Fun all around, we chatted we talked about life, we had some beer, we had some wiiiings. I ate almost all the veggies ha-ha, yumm.

Happy Accidents

Sunday June 21^st

So I decided to leave the lovely Plattsburgh for a little while and head on home to Huntington Long Island.  A very frantic packing and running around morning at 9am and then off on the road I go. Along the way I realized I am too tired to drive and I must pull over to get some coffee or food in ma belly. I come near the Saratoga exit, and knowing it’s a busy little town I figure Ill find something here to satiate my hunger. After a second thought I realized in the time it’ll take me to stop and get food I might as well stop in a small town and eat somewhere kitsch and nice. So along I go down i87 for another couple of miles. I find myself taking the round lake exit and seeing a sign for a place called the MY WAY CAFÉ. I follow the signs to find the restaurant and en route I pass a few people gardening away in the sun. I think to myself how great it is that their outside on a day like today and how I hope THE FOOD Group’s Garden on campus comes to be as large as this one I’m seeing now as I drive vie. So I keep [uttering along and find the MY WAY CAFÉ - only to see that it’s closed. Still with high hopes I turn around and decide to head back to the garden and ask the nice locals where’s a good place to stop - also giving myself an opportunity to ogle their produce. I pull along the residential street and walk over to an older couple (lets say early 60’ for good measure). 

After about 20 minutes of telling them my story and about the communal garden on campus they decide they must give me some Brussels sprouts to plant and some lettuce for the ride home – HOW NICE! The older woman of the couple then says to me.” that’s funny that you graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh, my grandson just started there, he’s a freshmen so you probably don’t know him – but he’s mentioned a garden before “ Before she even finished her second syllable I knew who I had just met! Oliver’s Grandma! WHAT A SMALL WORLD!!! So we Hugged and we talked about Oliver and then she showed me around other people’s plots and gave me a few gardening tips. THANKS GRANDMA! 

After a few more minute of sharing pleasantries and plant jargon I headed on my way down the road to check out this Round Lake the town is named after... and what a site !!! 

 After a quick run around in the rain! eek back down i87 for an Eventful week on Long Island

Garden Fun

THE FOOD GROUP

Quick Bio:

Sustainable, good tasting food is what we stand for. Join us in the struggle to integrate fair-traded, sustainable food products into our lives. This group is geared specifically towards social and environmental activism that will raise overall awareness of our food, where it comes from, and where it goes. Also, eating fine tasting home cooked food is an important ingredient to this food group! Meetings are held on the SUNY Plattsburgh Campus during the semester. Well me Meghan,  Dan,  Brendan and special guest for the weekend: Oliver weeded all afternoon. This Garden ash bee tilled and planted all by students its a testament to the future of our society. After taking care of the garden a short dip in the nearby river was a must... but please... refrain from drinking the water. even if you are tempted after seeing this picture

PHELPS

Wednesday June 10th

So this past-past Wednesday Kayleigh and Bailey and I hit the trails again to do PHELPS #32 and 4161 ft high !!!

We started out at the Adirondack Loj again and made out way along the trail,  passing by a lot of beautiful streams and quite a bid of toads. The view was great and we made out way back down planning on doing tabletop after. We were warned that TableTop did not have a marked trail but was a heard trail- sadly we could not find even the start for it so we just did the one peak for the day and headed back. 

Plans to do more are in the works...
